What should I expect from my tutoring consultation?

Hi and welcome!

Choosing a tutor is a difficult task! The reason you’ll be looking for a tutor is to support you with elements of the specification that you don’t understand, or that you’d like to improve – so you need to be able to trust that the person you are choosing can help you with this!

This is why I offer a 30-minute free consultation via Microsoft Teams, so that we can talk through your strengths and weaknesses and what you want to get out of tutoring. All sessions are tailored to your specific requirements, and any resources produced for the session are always shared straight away via email.

It is recommended that you have a series of tutoring sessions in order to see the best results, so during this initial consultation, I will draft a 6-week session plan which will intend to cover the areas that you’ve identified as weaknesses. This is flexible and can change, but provides us with an initial framework that helps you identify your goals. You can see an example session plan here.

In order for tutoring to be truly beneficial, you need to be prepared for the sessions – this means having all of your notes on the topic to hand before the session starts, and proactively adding to them throughout the hour. I may set you a task to do before the next session – this will only be when needed though – (no one wants extra homework!) – but also there’s no point in losing 15 minutes of your session to write a paragraph, you may as well write it beforehand and then we can review and edit it together.

If you’re not sure that this is the right choice for you, there’s no obligation to commit after the consultation! I will be running group sessions on specific topics from January 2025, so you could always join these if you are looking for help specifically on content.

If you have questions, or would like to book in a consultation, I’d love to hear from you – get my details from my Contact page!
